Professional Development

Burns & McDonnell fosters an environment of professional growth and development to move your career forward.

Whether you want to be a technical expert, project manager, sales professional — or some combination — we offer the opportunities and the training programs to build your career and help you achieve your personal goals.

Your career development includes training programs, networking opportunities and professional certification(s). Among our programs:

  • Burns & McDonnell University (BMU): Our on-site educational programs provide courses in marketing, management, technical training, computer software usage, safety and health, and other specialized courses for the betterment of the company and our employee-owners' career development. Many of the courses offered through BMU provide employees with professional development hours and continuing education units.
  • Tuition assistance: Attainment of advanced technical degrees is reimbursed fully after six months of service, while an MBA, depending on position and/or tenure, may also be eligible for 100 percent reimbursement.
  • Professional registration: All qualified technical professionals are expected to apply for state registration as soon as eligibility requirements are met. Employee-owners receive paid time off to take examinations, and 100 percent of the initial registration fee and annual renewals, including seal, are paid by the company. If the company requests certification in additional states, those fees are covered as well.
  • Technical certification: Employee-owners are encouraged to attain technical recognition through certification. The company pays 100 percent of the initial certification for an eligible employee, plus the annual renewal fees.
  • Professional society memberships: We encourage active involvement in professional service organizations. Our presence in these organizations is evidence of our commitment to the highest ethical and professional standards. Dues for active membership in up to two professional or technical organizations may be covered. Attendance at local meetings and events is encouraged and expenses are reimbursed.
