Burns & McDonnell routinely provides unofficial mentoring to small business concerns. We are also engaged in formal mentoring programs.
Through the Herman A. Johnson Business Mentorship and the Minority Business Alliance of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, Burns & McDonnell is mentoring Hector Luevano of Luevano Hart Construction and John Rolls of Whatever It Takes Electrical Company (WITEC).
Luevano Hart Construction was recently certified as a participant in the U.S. Small Business Administration's 8(a) Business Development Program. Luevano Hart specializes in commercial mechanical pipefitting, plumbing and HVAC services.
WITEC is a minority-owned firm providing services that include: power distribution, water treatment lighting, engineering, alarm systems, data, process controls, traffic signals, communications, industrial design-build, voice and data network infrastructure, street lighting, motor controls and back-up power systems.
Through the University of Missouri System M/WBE Advocacy Mentoring Program we are also mentoring City Design Group Inc. of St. Louis, a materials testing, environmental engineering and geotechnical services firm. City Design Group is a certified HUBZone firm.
The Burns & McDonnell Southern California office is mentoring MARRS Services Inc., a minority- and women-owned firm that offers full-service engineering, management and environmental services.
These mentorships focus on fundamental business improvement through the identification and successful resolution of quantifiable and critical-to-success issues. The objective is to enhance the business and economic development of disadvantaged businesses through the formation of successful business relationships, while providing resources, training and collaborative support in areas such as financial management, marketing and communications.
Burns & McDonnell also has a commitment to continuing contacts with Historically Black College and University & Minority Institutions (HBCU/MI) to discuss their capabilities and interest in federal subcontracting as suitable opportunities develop. The company teamed with the Clark Atlanta University School of Business Administration for a submittal to the Forest Park/Fort Gillem Local Redevelopment Authority on the Fort Gillem Business Plan Project. Although the team was not selected for the project, Burns & McDonnell is proud of the experience working with the students, the effort and quality of the proposal and presentation made by Clark Atlanta University.
