Burns & McDonnell has been named as one of America's best places to work by FORTUNE® magazine in the publication's 15th annual list of "100 Best Companies to Work For." In its second time on the annual listing, Burns & McDonnell ranked 26 on a list of companies that annually includes some of the most well known names in corporate America. Burns & McDonnell was the only Kansas City-based company to make the 2012 ranking.

To meet the urgent, growing need for investment in our national infrastructure, Burns & McDonnell is dividing its current Infrastructure Group into two practice areas — water and surface transportation — effective Jan. 1, 2012.

Unplugged, the entry submitted by Olathe North High School, has been selected to be constructed as a new exhibit in Science City and winner of the secondary school division. Richardson Elementary School in the Lee's Summit School District has been named winner of the elementary school division. Each school will be awarded a $50,000 grant to supportscience technology, math and engineering education.

Site preparation for the potato processing plant in Caldwell, Idaho, is anticipated to begin in May 2012, with startup expected by spring 2014. Burns & McDonnell has been named the primary design firm. A construction management firm has not yet been chosen, but many local engineering firms will be used on the project.

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers announced the thermal energy storage tank project at Thermal Energy Corp. (TECO) won first place in the industrial facilities or process (new) category. Burns & McDonnell and TECO will receive the award at ASHRAE's 2012 Winter Conference, held Jan. 21-25, 2012, in Chicago.

Burns & McDonnell has been awarded LEED Silver certification for existing buildings operations and maintenance by the U.S. Green Building Council. A separate LEED certification for new construction and major renovations is currently being pursued for the ongoing $25 million renovation of its world headquarters at 9400/9300 Ward Parkway.

To keep pace with the continued strong demand for engineering and construction services, Burns & McDonnell is adding 20,296 square feet of renovated office space at its existing location at 1700 West Loop South in the Galleria area of Houston. The firm expects to add 300 jobs in Houston by 2015, 100 of which in the next 18 months.

Burns & McDonnell has been selected by Dominion Virginia Power to provide engineer-procure-construct services for the 1,300-megawatt Warren County combined-cycle power project near Front Royal, Va.
