Cooling/Heating System Upgrade

Client: Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority
Burns & McDonnell completed the upgrade and expansion of the heating and cooling utility plants. Work included removal of existing chillers, cooling towers and HTHW generators and the installation of three new HTHW generators, eight new 2,000-ton chillers, new cooling towers, new control system and fuel storage facility. Work also included a new 13.2-kV power distribution system from Virginia Power.
The Utility Building West design upgrade included new control rooms, electrical service bays, laboratory rooms and office. The Utility Building East included a 9,000-square-foot building expansion for the chillers and basement for new pumping systems. New distribution pumping systems include variable frequency drives.
The design work included extensive phasing analysis and drawings to coordinate the construction work and maintain service to the airport terminal facilities throughout the construction phase.
