Evanston Water Treatment Plant

Burns & McDonnell provided the design and construction administration services for a 10-million-gallon-per-day (MGD) expansion to the city of Evanston's Water Treatment Plant. The work included design of two separate pretreatment trains consisting of rapid mixing, three-stage tapered horizontal flocculation and high-rate sedimentation utilizing inclined plate settlers.
Also included was gravity filtration, chemical storage and feed facilities, offices and administration facilities, bathrooms, an 18-MGD ultraviolet (UV) light disinfection system, upgrades to the existing treatment facility, and all associated yard piping, site work, electrical, instrumentation and controls and mechanical work required for a working system.
The UV system was installed to eliminate the need to add a new clearwell to meet CT requirements at peak flow. The project also included an evaluation of disinfection alternatives.
