Polyester Powder Coating Facility
Location: North Kansas City, Mo.
Client: Cook Composites & Polymers
Completion Date: 2002
Cook Composites & Polymers (CCP) selected Burns & McDonnell's Process & Industrial Group to design and construct its Polyester Powder Coating Facility at the North Kansas City, Mo., plant. Polyester powder is a key ingredient in powdered paints, which are environmentally friendly alternates to liquid solvent-based paints.

- Equipment procurement
- Systems integration
- Hazardous waste assessment and remediation planning
- Design-build
The project transferred polyester powder process technology from CCP’s sister company, Cray Valley Iberica, in Saint Celoni, Spain, allowing CCP to enter the North American market. The North Kansas City facility, completed during the summer of 2002, consists of both liquid and dry material handling systems. Specific unit operations include batch reaction, vapor separation, flaking, packaging, dust collection and utility systems such as a hot oil boiler and cooling tower.
Burns & McDonnell’s systems integrators installed an Allen-Bradley ProcessLogix system with approximately 300 input/output points, integrated several Allen-Bradley programmable logic controllers into the system and installed a plant information data historian with batch data tracking capabilities.
On this design-build project, Burns & McDonnell managed multiple subcontracts to perform construction and provided master construction scheduling and field cost control and reporting.
When the project encountered unanticipated wastes during excavation and construction, Burns & McDonnell’s Environmental Group provided on-site hazardous waste assessment and remediation planning.
- Incorporated new facility into existing plant
- Transferred technology from sister company in Spain
- Installed multiple liquid and dry material handling systems
- Provided systems integration for all unit operations
- Performed on-site hazardous waste assessment and remediation planning (via Burns & McDonnell’s Environmental Group)
