Regional Training Institute

Regional Training Institute

Location: Bangor, Maine

Client: Maine Army National Guard

Completion Date: 2008

Burns & McDonnell provided comprehensive A/E design and construction support services for the new Regional Training Institute (RTI) at the Maine Army National Guard's training site in Bangor, Maine. This $30 million project provides a permanent educational facility with adequate space for the 240th Regiment to plan, program and conduct Army National Guard and U.S. Army Reserve training for the region. The facility houses the 240th Regiment's 25 personnel and a student load of 100. The RTI provides primary facilities totaling 100,850 square feet for billeting, dining, administation and education.

The buildings on the complex are connected by enclosed walkways. The exterior building materials are masonry and metal panel wall systems, with energy efficient low-e insulated window glazing systems. The primary roof system is a combination of flat roof (built-up) and pitched standing seam metal roof assemblies.

All utilities were relocated underground and routed to avoid the new building locations. The primary physical security measures included standard standoff distances from roads and parking areas and minimal perimeter fencing. Boulders and/or bermed landscape were incorporated where possible to provide access while maintaining standoff distances.

Cost-effective, energy-conserving features were incorporated into all aspects of the design, including energy management control systems and high-efficiency motors, lighting and HVAC systems. The project was designed to achieve LEED Silver certification.
