The new Texas Diabetes Institute — University Center for Community Health complex is the largest in the United States dedicated to providing treatment, education and research of diabetes.

Treatment areas included a 15,000-square-foot renal dialysis building, patient lab, radiology, orthotics prosthetics, hyperbaric treatment, ophthalmology, podiatry, vascular lab, subacute and triage department and pharmacy. Project completed by Rick Keeler while with another firm, prior to joining Burns & McDonnell.

Education functions occur in the 150-seat auditorium with adjacent meeting rooms, community outreach/awareness department, teaching classrooms, teaching kitchen with demonstration and participation kitchens, patient library and offices of associated social agencies, social workers and psychologists. Clinical research is done in a laboratory with specialized technical equipment specified for diabetes research.
