Case Study: Port Columbus International Airport, Ohio
Columbus Regional Airport Authority, in keeping with its mission to provide passengers, businesses and its community with the highest level of safety, satisfaction and benefit, is implementing a comprehensive energy program at Port Columbus International Airport.
Facility energy-reducing measures will produce a 30 percent decrease in overall energy consumption. These measures include new hot water boilers, facilitywide energy-efficient lighting retrofits, a new power quality system, energy management system upgrades, energy-reducing escalator controls, and variable-flow HVAC system upgrades. The program also includes integration of the energy management and flight information display systems for scheduling of lighting and HVAC equipment.
The energy saved as a result of the program will provide an environmental benefit equivalent to taking 42,000 cars off the road for a year, saving more than 450,000 barrels of crude oil, planting 5 million new trees, or diverting more than 65,000 tons of waste from landfills to recycling centers. The program is being implemented under an energy services performance contract, allowing the airport authority to achieve a guaranteed level of energy savings totaling nearly $7 million over the next 10 years. Burns & McDonnell provided conceptual design, engineering, construction, management, measurement and verification, and performance guarantees for the program.
