KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Burns & McDonnell was named ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) Company of the Year at the ESOP Association's 35th Annual Conference this week in Washington, D.C.
Burns & McDonnell was honored as ESOP Company of the Year for its external promotion of ESOPs, involvement with ESOP industry groups, education efforts and sharing of ESOP information with employees, communications about the benefits of ESOPs with employees, and engagement with regulatory agencies, legislators and others influential in the ESOP community.
"I've had the pleasure of visiting Burns & McDonnell, and it was an amazing experience," said ESOP Association President J. Michael Keeling. "The company works to communicate the ESOP concept not only to the employee-owners but to the ESOP community at large."
The company celebrated its 25th year of employee ownership in 2011. Burns & McDonnell has been a member of the ESOP Association since 1986. This is the first time it has won the ESOP Company of the Year award.
Burns & McDonnell has been a strong supporter of employee ownership and the ESOP Association, presenting at conferences and seminars and reaching out to 26 members of Congress to share information about employee ownership and its value. Employee ownership events and reminders the company participates in include:
- A feature in the company newsletter called "Tales of Employee Ownership," personal stories about individual employee-owners that demonstrate how employee ownership has impacted them in a positive way.
- Employee Ownership Month: To celebrate National Employee Ownership Month, Burns & McDonnell hosts several activities in the month of October, including a pancake breakfast, chili cook-off and ESOP Bingo. The month is kicked off with a video message from CEO Greg Graves.
- Chili Bowl: On the first working day of each year, Burns & McDonnell celebrates the "burning" of the mortgage — the day the company made the final loan payment to the bank and officially became 100% employee-owned.
"It is an honor to be recognized as the ESOP Company of the Year," said Denny Scott, Burns & McDonnell chief administrative officer, who has served as president of the Heart of America Chapter of the ESOP Association. "Not only is it a recognition of the hard work we put into educating fellow employee-owners about our ESOP status, it is also a reminder of how fortunate we are to own the company we work for."
