Fort Sam Houston medical campus project aims for LEED Silver

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Burns & McDonnell’s Healthcare & Research Facilities Group has been awarded a contract to provide architectural and engineering design services for two new medical training facilities on the Medical Education Training Campus (METC) at Fort Sam Houston, in San Antonio.
The $117 million, 420,000-square-foot project will be jointly supervised by the U.S. Air Force Center for Engineering and Environment and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Medical Buildings 3 and 4 will be designed by Burns & McDonnell and be part of a planned nine-building military medical training campus.
The project will be delivered on a design-build basis in partnership with Environmental Chemical Corp. (ECC), an engineering, environmental and construction firm with offices nationwide. The buildings will be designed to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification. The project will include design of all floor plans, building elevations, building sections, site layout and utility plans, landscaping and interior design specifications. The buildings will accommodate classrooms, laboratories, a 300-seat auditorium, broadcast-quality television production studio and simulated hospital facilities. The facilities will accommodate specialized training courses for medical support technicians from all branches of the U.S. military.
Construction is scheduled to begin in January 2009 and is scheduled to be completed by October 2010.
