NOx Reduction
Print Screen

The Clean Air Interstate Rule requires some operating plants to meet lower NOx emission rates beginning in 2007. Additionally, plants currently meeting SIP regulations on an ozone seasonal basis will be required to operation selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems year-round.

NOx emissions have had a tremendous regulatory focus for the U.S. utility market during the past 10 years. Burns & McDonnell has extensive expertise on both combustion and post-combustion NOx reduction technologies.

Our team has completed fuel conversions to 100 percent Powder River Basin fuel for five units. These successful projects reduced SO2, NOx and increased profitability of the power plants.

Addition of secondary fuels, switching from coal to natural gas and other similar projects are part of what we do.

With more than 30 years of ongoing experience, we have performed more than 150 NOx reduction and combustion optimization projects. Our staff develops and implements client solutions to combustion side problems on any type of boiler.

Air quality control systems for emissions reductions: sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM) and mercury (Hg)
Burns & McDonnell can help power generation stations meet current and future emissions targets for sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter and mercury.

Our expertise and understanding of combustion process parameters, burner design, NOx formation, and the impacts on the balance of plant equipment have enabled us to provide solutions that minimize capital costs and provide long-term cost-effective NOx control.

In testimony to our client commitment, our engineers serve on several NFPA committees, helping to develop the rules for multiple burner boilers, fluidized bed boilers and HRSGs.

Air quality control systems, nitrogen oxide (NOx) reduction
Burns & McDonnell has expertise with combustion and post-combustion NOx reduction technologies.
Our engineering staff has extensive expertise and experience in post-combustion NOx reduction technologies including SCR, selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) and hybrid systems.
Our project work has included studies, design, project and construction management, and system optimization services. Our internal resources include the expertise to assist clients with catalyst management plans, operations and maintenance review, and process optimization.

SCR design and cost are primarily impacted by two items. One is selecting the reactor and connecting ductwork so that the reactor will operate within the proper temperature window between the economizer exit and the air heater. Second is integrating the SCR process and reactor into the plant using design practices facilitating improved construtability while keeping impacts on plant operations to a minimum.

Hybrid systems combine the SNCR and SCR technologies. The goal of the hybrid system is to reduce the size and catalyst loading of the SCR portion (in comparison to a standalone SCR) by cutting the amount of NOx entering the reactor, and using reagent that was not used in the SNCR.
