As a part of Burns & McDonnell’s Nationwide Vertical Construction IDIQ Contract, Burns & McDonnell provided design services to develop a 6,500-square-foot Alert Crew Quarters to house aircraft pilot and maintenance personnel on alert status. The Alert Crew Quarters is in close proximity to provide adequate response to the mission and within a secure perimeter.
The facility was located near an existing asphalt pavement taxilane that required grade transitions at the interface with the alert crew facility. The airfield pavement included an asphalt apron with asphalt taxilanes and shoulders as the base bid with an option to construct the apron and taxilanes with a Portland cement concrete (PCC) pavement system. The asphalt apron and taxilanes included 10 inches of asphalt on 6 inches of cement treated permeable base on 4 inches of aggregate base. The PCC option for the apron and taxilanes was an 8 inch PCC pavement on a 6-inch cement treated drainable base over a 4 inch aggregate base section. The shoulder consisted of 7 inches of asphalt pavement on 6 inches of aggregate base.
Alert Crew Quarters
The crew quarters include offices, recreational space, kitchen/dining area, lockers, and sleeping quarters with adequate levels of sound attenuation. The space is allocated to group facilities functions and to provide quick response to alert status missions. The facility was designed to achieve 65 dBA in the office and administrative spaces and 55 dBA in the sleeping quarters for short durations throughout the day. Given the function and location of the facilities acoustical issues were a critical design element. Therefore, the building was designed as a concrete structure with limited penetrations and a light gauge metal frame roof with a concrete deck.
A water distribution system including supply to the fire water storage tanks and pump house as well as supply to the fire hydrants on a looped feed and domestic supply to the alert shelters and crew quarters were included in the project. A sanitary sewer service with lift station and natural gas supply to all the facilities was also incorporated. Other utilities included the storm drainage system with leaders to building downspouts, and power with an emergency generator and significant communication feeds throughout the facility. In addition, 200 pair cable and 124sm/24mm fiber was fed from the command center located 6,500 feet from the facility.
High Security Facilities
The facility was located on the airport operations area (AOA) within a controlled perimeter. In addition, the facility is designated as a Protection Level 2 (PL2) Resource as defined by AFI 31-101. Therefore, the facility required entry control and continuous intrusion detection and surveillance at the restricted area boundary. An entry control building with access gates and perimeter fence was constructed as control. Conduit feeds from the entry control building were provided for government provided and installed IDS.
Fire Protection Systems
The fire suppression system included a high expansion foam (HEF) system in accordance with NFPA and ETL 02-15 criteria in the shelter as well as the a 750-square-foot fire pump house building and two 55,000-gallon water storage tanks. The hangar HEF system included five 13,880 cfm foam generators in each two-bay shelter with manual and heat detection activated systems.
