Achieving compliance with air quality rules and regulations is a constant effort. Meeting current and future emissions targets requires diligence, technological understanding and scientific knowledge. Our team has more than 40 years of experience helping power utilities plan, design and complete air quality control system projects, including studies, permitting support, system evaluations, process design, equipment specifications, construction management, startup, testing and troubleshooting.
Flue gas desulfurization (FGD): Nearly four decades of FGD design and system studies have made us a worldwide leader in the field. Our familiarity with key FGD suppliers and processes leads to efficient and economical operations for your new unit or retrofit/rebuild project. We also perform detailed system evaluations to improve removal efficiency and to reduce operating and maintenance costs.
Mercury (Hg): Our senior staff members, recognized as leading mercury experts in the U.S., helped position the utility industry to effectively meet the regulatory requirements of the Clean Air Mercury Rule (CAMR). Our team’s experience includes mercury testing, participation in Department of Energy research projects, activated carbon injection (ACI) system evaluation and design, evaluation of co-benefits for various technologies, and evaluation and procurement of mercury continuous emission monitoring (CEM) systems.
Nitrogen oxide (NOx): Under the Clean Air Interstate Rule (CAIR), NOx emissions have become a significant focus across the utility industry. WE have experience with both combustion and post-combustion NOx reduction technologies, including selective catalytic reduction (SCR), selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) and hybrid systems. We’ve completed fuel conversions on 100 percent Powder River Basin fuel for five units. These successful projects reduced sulfur dioxide (SO2), NOx and increased profitability of the power plants. We have also handled the addition of secondary fuels, switching from coal to natural gas and other similar projects. We have performed more than 150 NOx reduction and combustion optimization projects. Our staff develops and implements client solutions to combustion side problems on any type of boiler.
Particulate matter (PM) control: Our design of new precipitators and baghouses, precipitator conversions, and precipitator evaluations have helped dozens of utilities optimize their particulate control systems. Services range from detailed design and procurement specifications to evaluation of tender offers and overall project management.
