EPC contractor for facility housing the largest battery storage facility in the nation and adjacent substation.
HOUSTON — As a pioneer of the sodium-sulfur NAS battery system, Electric Transmission Texas, LLC (ETT) — a joint venture between subsidiaries of American Electric Power and MidAmerican Energy Holdings Co. — energized the nation's largest battery storage facility in March 2010, in time to meet increased peak summer demand. The quick-responding, 4-MW sodium-sulfur NAS battery system can address voltage fluctuations and momentary outages with an uninterrupted, eight-hour power supply and the ability to receive electricity from Mexico's Comisiûn Federal de Electricidad (CFE) in an emergency. To protect the battery storage system from the extreme weather conditions in Presidio, Texas — heavy winds, dust and extreme temperatures up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit — project engineer-procure-construct contractor Burns & McDonnell designed and constructed a facility to house the battery storage system in addition to designing the adjacent substation. For this $25 million project, Burns & McDonnell also assisted in coordinating the integration of substation and battery equipment technologies.
