KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Burns & McDonnell has been named as one of America's best places to work by FORTUNE® magazine in the publication's 15th annual list of "100 Best Companies to Work For." In its second time on the annual listing, Burns & McDonnell ranked 26 on a list of companies that annually includes some of the most well known names in corporate America. Burns & McDonnell was the only Kansas City-based company to make the 2012 ranking.

The list and related articles appear in the Feb. 3 issue of FORTUNE and at www.FORTUNE.com today.

According to the magazine, the driving factor for companies making this year's list was their track record at creating jobs and in open, transparent communication with employees. The FORTUNE ranking is determined by the Great Place to Work Institute, which oversees a comprehensive survey and evaluation process. Two-thirds of a company's score comes from the Trust Index that is derived from surveys returned by employees. The remainder of the score is determined by the Culture Audit, an analysis of company policies.

Over the past five years, and despite a severe economic recession, Burns & McDonnell has added more than 1,300 positions to its nationwide workforce and last year announced plans to add 1,000 additional jobs by year-end 2013.

"We're thrilled to be recognized alongside many of the top names in corporate America for the one attribute we value most highly, being an excellent place to work," said Burns & McDonnell Chairman and CEO Greg Graves. "This is a place people come when they are ready for a career, not just a job."

A 100-percent employee-owned company, Burns & McDonnell celebrated its 25th year of employee ownership in 2011. The engineering, architecture and construction firm marked the anniversary by launching a $25 million expansion and renovation of its world headquarters facility in South Kansas City. The renovations include addition of a large new health clinic, fitness center, cafeteria, 450-seat auditorium and numerous other quality of life features. At year-end 2011, Burns & McDonnell employed 3,300 employee-owners nationwide and 2,200 in Kansas City.

"As an employee-owned firm, everyone shares in the rewards that come from success," Graves said. "That is a tremendous motivating factor because we know that the only way we will continue to be successful is to continue to do whatever it takes to satisfy our clients. We are all focused on client success and we have a personal, tangible stake in doing whatever it takes to achieve that outcome. "

To pick the "100 Best Companies to Work For," FORTUNE works with the Great Place to Work Institute — a global research and consulting firm with offices in 30 countries — to conduct the most extensive employee survey in corporate America.

More than 246,000 employees from 280 companies responded to the 60-question survey created by the institute. Two-thirds of a company's score is based on the survey, which is sent to a minimum of 400 randomly selected employees. The remaining third is based on a company's responses to the Culture Audit questionnaire, which asks detailed questions about demographics, pay and benefits, and open-ended questions on philosophy, communication and more.
