HOUSTON, Texas — Burns & McDonnell is adding more than 40,000 square feet of office space at its existing location in Houston. The added space is needed to accommodate up to 550 employee-owners as demand for the firm's engineering and construction services is projected to remain strong for the next several years.

The expansion is among the largest in the firm's history and includes occupying six floors of the 1700 West Loop Plaza building to be named the "Burns & McDonnell Plaza."

More than 350 Burns & McDonnell-Houston employees will be housed in the top floors of the building. The firm has engaged its Architecture group to redesign the interior into a company showpiece.

"It's going to be an incredibly fun space," says Leslie Duke, vice president and general manager of the company's Texas offices. "We want coming here to be an experience that sends a distinct message to our clients as to what we're all about."

Phase 1 of the overhaul, which includes floors 8, 11, 12 and 14, is expected to be complete by the end of the year.

"We are excited about what this means for Burns & McDonnell," Duke says. "We've more than doubled our staff in Houston since 2008, when we added the 10th floor office space to accommodate growth. We are building a base of leadership here and hiring only the best of the best — people who want to spend a career at our firm, recently ranked No. 18 in Fortune's annual Best Companies to Work For in 2013."

Strong growth in the areas of electrical transmission and distribution and the oil and gas markets, as well as a need for design-build project delivery, have fueled much of the growth of Burns & McDonnell-Houston.

"The energy sector is booming. Everything is aggressive," Duke says. "Adding the design-build construction component is the delivery model helping us flourish in Houston."

The Burns & McDonnell Houston office opened in 1994. It has been at its current location in the Galleria area since 2004.
