KANSAS CITY, Missouri — Burns & McDonnell recently completed construction of Vistra’s 100-MW/400-MWh battery energy storage system expansion at its Moss Landing Energy Storage Facility in California.
The Moss Landing battery energy storage expansion, which went online in July, brings the system’s capacity to 400 megawatts/1,600 megawatt-hours, making it the largest battery storage facility in the world. The energy storage facility is located on the same site as an existing natural gas plant and multiple retired fossil generation assets and leverages the existing interconnection.
“With its existing infrastructure fully intact and the physical space to accommodate future growth, Moss Landing is a world-class industrial site that provides a unique opportunity for extensive battery development,” says Claudia Morrow, senior vice president of development and strategy at Vistra. “Our partnership with Burns & McDonnell has been key to our success in expanding this world-class project that is, importantly, bolstering the availability of reliable power to Californians.”
Burns & McDonnell completed construction in just 10 months — three months faster than originally anticipated. The project overcame many challenges associated with the market conditions, supply chain and shipping constraints, and COVID-19.
Using LG Energy Solution lithium-ion batteries, the Moss Landing battery energy storage system will help stabilize California’s grid as utilities statewide shed key baseload resources, including large-scale nuclear and natural gas power generation assets, to meet the state’s zero-carbon goal by 2045. The batteries will store excess wind and solar power, making it available during periods of high energy demand and intermittent production.
“We are proud to help Vistra lead the charge in California’s transformation to renewable energy sources by designing and building a world-class battery storage project at Moss Landing — a site that has been providing residents with reliable power for more than 70 years,” says Chris Ruckman, energy storage director at Burns & McDonnell. “This project will not only help California integrate solar and wind power generation, but also support local reliability needs and provide renewable energy storage flexibility.”
“As Vistra strives to transform its power generation portfolio with zero-carbon technologies, Burns & McDonnell is proud to perform the construction of the expansion of the Moss Landing Battery Storage project that will be pivotal in helping them meet their goals,” says Doug Riedel, senior vice president for renewable generation at Burns & McDonnell.
Burns & McDonnell ranks among the top 10 design firms in the U.S. and is No. 1 in Power, according to Engineering News-Record (ENR). Additionally, the firm also ranks among the top 10 design-build firms in the nation.
