With Plans to Double in Size in Charlotte, Burns & McDonnell Moves to New Location to Better Serve the Region
07/29/2022 2 minute read

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina — The Charlotte office of Burns & McDonnell has relocated to Whitehall Corporate Center, a larger space that can accommodate the staff required to support major infrastructure expansion in the region and meet the needs of a growing customer base in a variety of industries.

The Charlotte office expansion is primarily driven by a growing number of power generation, electric and gas transmission and distribution projects for the energy industry. Growth is also being driven by large investments in renewable energy in the Carolinas including solar, storage and offshore wind. Additionally, the company's regional expansion is being fueled by projects in the aerospace, industrial, manufacturing and water/wastewater sectors, as well as by services provided by the firm’s business, emerging technologies and cybersecurity consulting arm, 1898 & Co.

Burns & McDonnell is a 100% employee-owned architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) firm based in Kansas City, Missouri. The 124-year-old firm opened an office in Charlotte in 2016 with two employees and has since grown to 30 total employees. Plans call for the staff to more than double in size over the next year to support growing infrastructure needs in the area. Over 30 engineers, architects, project managers, construction professionals and more will be hired as new services and projects are launched.

With more than 60 offices globally, 19 of the firm’s offices are in the Southeast, including another North Carolina location in Raleigh. The Whitehall Corporate Center was selected for the new office because of its capacity for long-term expansion and proximity to a diverse and highly skilled talent pool.

“Through the federal government’s Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, significant dollars are being infused into communities for critical infrastructure projects, including billions in North Carolina,” says Oko Buckle, vice president of the Southeast region for Burns & McDonnell. “We want to help shape area growth. As projects become more complicated and urgent, we pride ourselves in delivering future-forward solutions that demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the complexities of the regions and industries we support.”

The Burns & McDonnell professionals in Charlotte offer a full range of consulting, engineering, architecture and construction services for clients. The employee-owners have experience managing all stages of development from master planning and design to construction and commissioning. They focus on utility, developer and large-campus clients that need support with power generation, storage, electric and gas transmission and distribution, renewables, pipelines and environmental services. Water, wastewater, manufacturing, industrial and aerospace services are also an important part of the group’s expanding project mix.

“As an AEC industry leader, we’re proud of the work we do globally, as well as what we do in Charlotte. Our Southeast region has managed some of the largest multibillion-dollar electric reliability projects in the country,” says Paul Fischer, president, Burns & McDonnell. “Plus, we have extensive experience working in the renewable energy space, which is a growing market in the Carolinas. With the expansion of our Charlotte team, we’re increasing our capacity to continue designing, building and helping others manage the area’s most critical infrastructure.”

Burns & McDonnell is ranked No. 1 in the Power industry and No. 8 among the Top 500 Design-Build Firms by Engineering News-Record. The firm is also ranked No. 1 on the 2022 Great Employers to Work for in North Carolina list (large companies category), featured in Business North Carolina Magazine.
