The Kansas Airspace Awareness Tool (KAAT) and the Thermal Energy Corp. (TECO) Master Plan Implementation (MPI) project earned Honor Awards at the 2012 National ACEC Engineering Excellence Gala.
The KAAT is the result of collaboration between the Kansas Department of Transportation and Burns & McDonnell. It helps local planning agencies develop zoning to increase awareness about protected airspace around airports. The KAAT also won the Engineering Excellence Award from the Kansas ACEC Chapter.
For TECO, the comprehensive MPI project to install an on-site combined heat and power system doubled operating efficiency to 80 percent; reduced greenhouse gas emissions by almost 83,000 metric tons of carbon equivalent per year; and improved the security, reliability and emergency operation capacity of the utility infrastructure. TECO also won the Engineering Excellence Gold Medal from Texas ACEC.
