- 550-MW Black Start System
Our team implemented the first black start system for a GE 7FA combustion turbine equipped with an LCI starting system. The 550-MW generating station is a combined-cycle facility with two GE 7FA combustion turbines with dual-fuel capacity, as well as a GE D11 steam turbine. Six 2.1-MW Caterpillar 3516B diesel engine generators, split into two groups of three, were supplied to meet the plant’s auxiliary power requirements during a black start.
The black start system design criteria included maintaining a minimum of 85 percent of rated voltage during motor starting and no less than 90 percent after the application of each load. Total harmonic distortion at the plant’s main 4,160-V distribution system would be limited to 5% or less.
