- A/E Design & Construction Inspection Services Program
Our team provides comprehensive, detailed and coordinated designs that comply with National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) requirements, CNS-specific design criteria, industry standards, Department of Energy standards and federal regulations under a basic ordering agreement (BOA). This five-year agreement at the Pantex Plant and Y-12 National Security Complex covers A/E design and construction inspection services for new construction and renovations, including studies, conceptual design, detailed design, engineering studies and design, regulatory expertise, scheduling, cost estimating, commissioning and construction inspections.
The projects included to date cover a range of services and facility types. Among them:
High Explosive Pressing Facility Noise Study: We performed a noise study on several spaces within this facility. After a kick-off meeting to fully understand the scope and identify existing equipment, operational needs, building requirements, future modifications and objectives, we collected sound data on-site. The resulting information was modeled to allow the impact of several potential solutions to be analyzed from an individual and combined perspective. A final report conveyed the recommended solutions and the impact each would have on the noise level, resulting in a menu of options that could be implemented in phases to achieve varying degrees of noise reduction.
Wastewater Treatment Plant Evaluation: We evaluated the wastewater treatment facility serving the Pantex Plant. The facility consists of three lagoons, with one lagoon being facultative while the other two lagoons are used for storage. We also provided A/E services for the design of repairs and construction support services for the wastewater treatment ponds.
Secondary Electrical Feeder Concept Design: We provided conceptual design and later final design for the 12-37 Secondary Electrical Feeder project at the Pantex Plant. Conceptual design documents were prepared to 30% level of completion, including drawings, design basis, equipment list, calculations and specification list. We also prepared a construction cost estimate based on the conceptual documents. We performed an on-site investigation and met with stakeholders to understand existing conditions and user requirements. The design provided two independent electrical feeders to 12-37 and upgrades to the existing transformers. Each electrical feeder is backed by an uninterruptible power system (UPS). Provisions were included for a future 600-kW diesel standby generator. Existing mechanical systems were assessed and design was completed to provide N+1 redundancy for the temperature and humidity controls in the building. Smaller modifications were required for the fire protection and architectural systems in the building to accommodate the electrical and mechanical changes.
Flame Detection Systems (FDS) (Multiple Projects): We created a 3D computer-aided drafting (CAD) model of manufacturing cell layouts to optimize locations for flame detectors at the Pantex Plant. Drawings were produced to identify the location and coverage of each detector. We also completed design package updates and construction phase technical support for FDS replacement projects at the Pantex Plant. Our scope included updating designs based on client changes, responding to contractor Requests for Information (RFIs), field change requests (FCRs) and submittals.
High-Pressure Fire Loop Lead-In (Multiple Projects): We provided construction phase technical support for the previously designed replacement work at the Pantex Plant. Scope included responding to contractor RFIs, FCRs and submittals. Site visits and as-built document preparation were also included in the scope.
Equipment Installation Design Project: We provided design documents to support the installation of new manufacturing equipment in building 12-68 at the Pantex Plant.
Design for Phase 1A RAMS Replacement Project: We provided design for additional facilities at the Pantex Plant based on our previous design and created technical manuals for the Radiation Alarm and Monitoring System or Realtime Air Monitoring System (RAMS) replacement project.
Generator Installation: We provided design for the installation of a new 480-V generator and supporting equipment at building 12-84E at the Pantex Plant. Our scope included electrical, civil, structural, fire protection and architectural design as well as a site visit.
