- Air Traffic Control Tower and Taxiway
Burns & McDonnell provided primary facilities for a new air traffic control tower and a parallel taxiway and renovation of an existing taxiway at Naval Air Station North Island.
The new control tower is 150 feet tall with five intermediate floors and the main cab. Intermediate floors support elements such as building utilities, a training room, tower equipment room and ready room. The exterior of the building features textured precast concrete panels providing a durable surface for the ocean environment. The tower integrated new air traffic control technology, including radars. Building electrical systems provided severable electrical systems, back-up power generation and special grounding systems for air traffic equipment. Mechanical systems comply with California Title 24 and meet FAA requirements considering such items as humidity. Facility design follows Department of Defense Minimum Antiterrorism Standards for Buildings (UFC 4-010-01).
Demolition work included demolition of the existing tower down to the third floor ceiling. The building received a new roof at the third floor and revisions to the stairway and removal of the elevator. The existing tower was connected to the new tower via an underground ductbank. The airfield operation was transferred from the old tower to the new tower over a three-day weekend with no impact on airfield operations.
The taxiway work included replacement of part of the existing taxiway with a dual taxiway and parking apron, new security standoff area with protective bollards, parking striping/renovations, airfield lighting and signage, as well as provisions for underground utilities. The new taxiway pavement section was 15 inches of concrete pavement on 6 inches of compacted subgrade and required the removal of the existing 9-inch pavement. The taxiway is in accordance with the new Unified Facilities Criteria. The taxiway work was phased to protect airfield operations.
