Burns & McDonnell provided comprehensive design services, post-construction award services and on-site resident engineering services to Black Construction Co. under a design-build contract with the Navy for an aircraft maintenance hangar at Andersen Air Force Base.
The project — to design, construct, commission and deliver an Air Expeditionary Force (AEF) Forward Operating Location (FOL) aircraft maintenance hangar in Guam — supports the AEF bomber force that operates out of Andersen AFB during contingencies. Successful implementation of this concept includes construction on Guam of a maintenance hangar to resist typhoon and seismic forces to support the forward deployment.
The 51,000-square-foot structure provides maintenance and reliable shelter to B-1B, B-2, B-52, KC-135, F-22 and other aircraft that cannot be flown off the island before a typhoon. The hangar is required to nose dock KC10, B767 and C-17 aircraft requiring maintenance and service and includes adjacent administration areas, maintenance and support areas, hazardous materials storage area, and support spaces.
The hangar is a concrete arch shell roof with precast open folded-plate arch segments jointed in a monolithic manner. The exterior hangar doors are six-leaf horizontal sliding doors. Interior vertical-lifting fabric doors divide the hangar into two maintenance spaces for individual environmental control. Other specialized mechanical systems include shop air systems, breathing air system, overhead cranes and spot ventilation systems.
