Burns & McDonnell provides engineering services for the management of both underground and aboveground storage tanks at 32 airports across the United States. The services include tank tightness testing, upgrading facilities to meet federal, state and local environmental regulations, and the preparation of compliance notebooks and spreadsheets. The notebooks and computer spreadsheets are used to maintain site histories and document the compliance-related activities. The information is regularly updated to reflect any changes in system conditions.
Kansas City, Mo.
Burns & McDonnell has provided engineering services for the removal of 11 underground storage tanks at the American aircraft overhaul base in Kansas City, Mo. The tanks ranged from 1,500 to 50,000 gallons for the storage of jet fuel, gasoline and diesel fuel. American retained Burns & McDonnell to investigate and close a seven-acre hazardous waste landfill containing a mixture of metal plating waste, solvents, paint and sandblasting wastes, petroleum products, and construction debris. An electromagnetic survey, exploratory trenching and borings were used to define the vertical and horizontal limits of the fill and identify lithologies. Burns & McDonnell implemented remedial technologies to protect potential receptors. Remedial technologies designed and implemented by Burns & McDonnell included ex-situ bioremediation, soil vapor extraction (SVE), internal leachate collection systems and a 6-acre composite RCRA cap.
Burns & McDonnell directed the removal of seven underground storage tanks (USTs) and closure of the former fuel farm. The USTs previously contained jet fuel, solvents, gasoline and waste oil. The fuel farm project included preparation of plans and specifications for the UST removal and fuel farm demolition activities. Assistance was also provided to American Airlines throughout the bidding and remedial contractor selection process. A Burns & McDonnell representative was on site throughout demolition and excavation activities to document the excavation progress and assist in segregation of the soils.
Burns & McDonnell conducted an extensive site survey to evaluate all petroleum and chemical storage areas at the Maintenance and Engineering Center. This information was used to prepare a comprehensive SPCC plans.
Burns & McDonnell designed the new fuel farm at the Maintenance and Engineering Center. This facility, which includes a system of new USTs, is responsible for all fueling and defueling of American's aircraft, which are scheduled for maintenance. The USTs include a state-of-the-art leak detection monitoring system.
At O'Hare International Airport, Chicago, Burns & McDonnell's engineering services included preparing specifications and engineering drawings for the removal of three tanks, installation of two new tanks and the modification of a 10,000 gallon gasoline tank. Additional services included initial investigations of the existing system's conditions, tank tightness testing, evaluation of contractor bids, and site visits to observe construction progress.
New York City
Burns & McDonnell is completing a UST management program for 57 USTs at John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia airports. The tanks are used to store fuel oil, gasoline, kerosene, waste oil and glycol. The program includes subsurface investigations to assess contamination at the sites. This work is being coordinated with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The UST management program includes tank tightness testing, site assessments, and detailed design and construction oversight for tank removals, replacements and upgrades.
Burns & McDonnell provided engineering services including construction oversight for UST removal and closure. A site assessment was conducted after closure activities to verify regulatory compliance.
Burns & McDonnell has also provided on site remediation assistance associated with a jet fuel hydrant system leak. The effort included removal of contaminated soils, the installation of monitoring wells and the recovery of free product.
Burns & McDonnell provided the engineering services and oversight required for the testing of a fuel transfer line and subsurface investigations. Subsurface investigations and soil sampling was conducted at fuel farm, hydrant fueling system, fuel loading rack and transfer pipeline facilities.
Burns & McDonnell provided engineering services and regulatory assistance for the in-place closure of a 10,000 gallon ethylene glycol tank. The underground storage tank at the American Maintenance Hangar was underneath the hangar floor.
Burns & McDonnell provided engineering services for the removal of a 10,000 gallon gasoline UST. The project included the preparation of plans and specifications for removal, the installation of three monitoring wells, construction observations and closure documentation.
