- Automated Deboning Operation
Burns & McDonnell, with joint venture partner P1 Group, reworked the existing chicken deboning operation in Tyson’s Monroe, N.C., plant on a turnkey basis. The design-build project included all work required to achieve a fully operational system, including a utility analysis and modification, facility layout, equipment design and procurement, installation and startup services.

This project increased the throughput efficiency of the deboning operation. The major process areas included tote unloading; bird sizing; deboning; skinning; trimming; fillet sizing; marinating; wing, tender, and fillet bulk packaging; tray loading; final tray packaging; and tenderizing. The project schedule was driven by equipment deliveries and plant production schedules.
Burns & McDonnell deliverables included general arrangements, piping drawings, MCC one-lines, panelboard schedule, and plant lighting design.
The Burns & McDonnell team coordinated project work packages and execution schedules to minimize down time. The project removed the existing deboning line equipment, set new equipment, and returned the line to operation within a single extended weekend.
