The AltaLink Bernese project engineer-procure-construct (EPC) scope was to provide a greenfield 138-kV substation, several 138-kV transmission line cutovers and a new 138-kV transmission line. Burns & McDonnell supported the project for more than two years, starting early on from a proposal estimating and permitting phase, through engineering, procurement, extreme winter construction (-40°C) and, finally, energization. This project consists of EPC services for two 138/6.9-kV 20/26/33 MVA transformer units, two 138-kV live tank circuit breakers and associated switches, associated 138-kV and 6.9-kV isolation equipment, and installation of a new control house.
Burns & McDonnell was involved early, obtaining permits, completing environmental reviews and assisting with general system planning. Bernese Substation was connecting into an AltaLink critical substation where outages had to be coordinated and approved far in advance to limit the impact on nearby refineries and pipelines. Our team created an outage schedule that included four transmission line cutovers to be completed in two months. The cutovers were completed without issue and the project was completed under budget.
