Blackstone Steam Plant CHP Addition

Client: Harvard University
Location: Cambridge, Mass.

Burns & McDonnell was selected to conduct a Level II combined heat and power (CHP) study that investigated potential alternatives for expansion of CHP capability at Harvard's historic Blackstone Steam Plant. The initial screening-level phase analyzed six options at the Blackstone Steam Plant and six options for a new standalone combined heat and power facility to be located at an alternate campus location. The study evaluated various sizes of prime mover and developed detailed performance characteristics that were subjected to a dispatch model to most effectively use both the existing assets as well as the proposed systems. The final design of an 8 MW CHP project is under way.
