- Bridge Over Calcasieu River
Harrington & Cortelyou (a Burns & McDonnell Company) provided rehabilitation services for this 220-foot swing span truss bridge, which was built around 1903 and spans the Calcasieu River in Westlake, La. The project entailed replacing the old mechanical gears and linkage for pulling the wedges and raising the rail joints and center latch with electric motor driven actuators. Existing mechanical equipment for driving the span was replaced with new motor-driven gear reducers and new rack and pinion gears. The manual operation system was also replaced with a new programmable logic control (PLC) panel to provide remote operation from the control house located off the bridge.
The bridge needed additional structural work, including stabilization of the west rest pier and a new pier cap. The project team designed a new bearing block for the east approach span as well as various machinery supports and equipment platforms needed to complete the job.
