- Cinergy Solutions: Boiler MACT Study & Design
In anticipation of potential Industrial Boiler MACT (Maximum Achievable Control Technology) regulations, Cinergy Solutions hired Burns & McDonnell to develop and perform an engineer-procure-construct (EPC) project at the site of a confidential process plant in Virginia.
The existing plant had seven aging PC boilers ranging in size from 50,000 pounds/hour to 200,000 pounds/hour. Two options were evaluated as a result of anticipated MACT guidelines. The first was an air pollution control retrofit on the existing PC boilers (scrubber, baghouse). The second was the addition of three new 400,000 pounds/hour circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boilers burning a variety of local coal and wood biomass.
Burns & McDonnell provided Cinergy Solutions with a complete EPC package for both options, completing conceptual design including piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), process flow diagrams, electrical one-lines, site layouts, control system architecture and specifications for major equipment. Burns & McDonnell distributed specifications for major equipment including boiler, ash handling, air pollution control equipment, coal handling and limestone handling..
