Renovations to the Colmery-O'Neil Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC) in Topeka, Kansas, will make accommodations more comfortable for residents living with dementia and Alzheimer's disease. When the project scope changed significantly, the Burns & McDonnell design team adapted quickly. A planned addition to the Community Living Center (CLC) evolved into 16,200 square feet of connected space. Now, an addition houses resident rooms, a meditation room, bistro, media room and family gathering space.
Connecting the two ends of the CLC created a continuous loop of circulation, shortening the route for medical staff. The staff's ability to serve the residents' needs was paramount throughout the process. The project team consulted with the center's nurses, doctors and other specialists to understand their concerns, developing a design solution that encourages operational efficiency.
