- Controlled Industrial Facility
The Controlled Industrial Facility (CIF) supports maintenance and repair services for naval nuclear powered submarines located at Groton, Conn., on an Electric Boat facility. The two-story concrete building is designed to prevent spilled liquids or airborne contaminants from being released to the surrounding environment. The building houses a radiological liquid waste process system. Major equipment in this structure includes a nuclear-rated bridge crane, process/storage tanks, HEPA filtering system and an electric-powered door.
The CIF building is divided into a controlled area, support area and an enclosed storage area. The controlled area includes the high bay area, the chemical lab/radiology lab/personnel decontamination room, the HEPA filter mezzanine, the access point and the control room. The CIF support area is a two-story building consisting of restrooms, equipment rooms and an office area. The enclosed storage area provides short-term storage of radioactive material being delivered to or shipped from the CIF-controlled area.
