Data Center Upgrade

Client: Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas City
Completion Date: 2016
Location: Kansas City, Missouri

Burns & McDonnell is the engineer of record on this design-build project, which is being constructed and commissioned by Burns & McDonnell. It involves upgrading the existing electrical and mechanical systems within an active live data center. The electrical upgrade project portion includes replacement of the existing 500kVA/450kW uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system (both A and B side) and associated electrical components.

The mechanical upgrade project includes replace existing four chillers with high efficient magnetic bearing type centrifugal type chillers. Each new chiller is sized at 210 tons, will operate under variable primary pumping operation, to handle the full cooling load, with only one chiller in operation to maintain N+1 system operation.

Other aspect of this project includes fire alarm system upgrade along with implementing a very early smoke detecting apparatus (VESDA) for monitoring/alarming of the data center, electrical rooms and UPS rooms. A temporary UPS system along with temporary chiller system will be deployed in order to maintain system redundancy during system replacement. An arc flash and breaker coordination study is also being executed under this project.
