- Distribution Asset Renewal Planning
Our team worked with Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) to achieve a comprehensive and fiscally efficient five-year Distribution Asset Renewal Plan (DARP). We applied our innovative holistic distribution planning methodology, which relies on experienced planners and unique tools that have proven effective at multiple large investor-owned utilities.
Our planning maximizes the capabilities of distribution modeling tools and the latest techniques in asset data analytics to analyze the WPS distribution network and develop targeted asset-level improvement projects. These projects deliver enhanced system performance (reliability) and prepare the network for a future filled with distributed energy resources and electric transportation. We have established a partnership with DNV GL, the makers of SynergiTM Electric. DNV GL was integral to the project team, amplifying the value and capabilities of the modeling software.
Rather than developing projects programmatically by asset type, the planning process applied a list of criteria (including load transfer automation, feeder exposure, phase balancing, aged cable, small copper wire, small/aged pole replacements, etc.) across a geographic group of circuits and customers to optimize that regional system. This resulted in projects that are geographically concentrated, coordinated and more efficient to design and construct. It also facilitated a region/concentration of customers to receive all DARP benefits in a short period of time and experience dramatic local system improvement leading to measurable long-lasting impacts that continue to make customers and regulators happy.
Projects were developed and constructed on 200-plus circuits. To create these projects, the project team used SynergiTM distribution planning models and CYMTCC protection coordination analysis. The analysis included:
- Substation modeling and model enhancements
- Weather normalized load forecasting
- Reliability modeling
- Reconfigurations, line rebuilds and phase balancing
- Asset optimization and device replacements
- Distribution automation
- Overcurrent protection analysis
The analysis also included or considered existing programs and initiatives such as:
- Aged cable replacement
- Strategic undergrounding
- Rural rebuilds
- Small copper replacement
Our distribution engineers created scope documents for the projects developed throughout the planning analysis. They worked within the WPS design tools and created work requests that facilitated the procurement and construction execution.
