- Distribution Integrity Management Program
The Distribution Integrity Management Programs — Distribution Risk Evaluation and Monitoring System (DIMP DREAMS) initiative identifies Non-State-of-the-Art (NSOA) distribution pipe that is targeted each year for replacement. Our team of planners, sketchers and clerks support that effort. Since 2017, we have assisted SoCalGas, along with other internal and contractor teams, in the planning to replace approximately 180 miles of pipe.
DIMP DREAMS planners begin with background research including substructures, permitting issues and paving moratoriums. Planners evaluate any issues which could impede planning or constructability. Field visits, GIS, service histories, Google Earth and other tools paint the picture of what is in the field and what direction the planning must take. Planners follow applicable SoCalGas standards and procedures along with state or local requirements.
Once the facts are known, the planner creates a detailed project design in the SoCalGas SAP system. The planner fleshes it out with Virtual Compatible Units (VCUs) and an array of individual labor, equipment and material compatible units (CUs). The planner works with SoCalGas resources to resolve issues related to right-of-way, cathodic protection, leakage history, environmental and California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) 955.5 compliance.
This culminates in a completed design, permits and an approved work package that is issued to SoCalGas maintenance supervisors for field execution. Contract construction crews then perform the installations under the direction of SoCalGas Inspectors and Supervisors.
Our team, has implemented specific screening tools and processes to select candidates qualified to pass SoCalGas training test for this scope of work and developed design guidelines and process checklists to help define scope and minimize changes as the program evolved. We also helped SoCalGas shift to isolated service replacements from their initial priority of full main replacements.
