- Dodd Water Treatment Plant Upgrade
Burns & McDonnell is providing design-build services and construction management services for the upgrade to the Dodd Water Treatment Plant (DWPT) in Niwot, Colorado. This project is using alternative project delivery in the form of a progressive design-build. A joint venture between Burns & McDonnell and Garney Construction is designing and constructing the upgrades. The district selected the design-build project delivery format to create a strong team, increase communication and meet a very aggressive project schedule.
The DWTP includes conventional pretreatment with high-rate inclined plate settlers, microfiltration (MF)/ultrafiltration (UF) membranes, clearwell and high service pumping to increase capacity from 8 million gallons per day (MGD) to 10 MGD, with the capability to expand to 16 MGD. Additional facility components include administrative spaces; a laboratory; a control center; chemical storage and feed for a coagulant, sodium permanganate, sodium hypochlorite, hydrochloric acid, hydrofluorosilicic acid, citric acid, powder activated carbon, caustic soda, and sodium bisulfite; and full site development including solids holding ponds, storm drainage and raw water pipes.
The membrane filtration system will be procured before the final design phase, allowing Burns & McDonnell and Garney Construction to optimize the design of the existing facility spaces and minimize overall project costs. The process typically reduces the potential for redesign that could otherwise result from the procurement of the membrane system after design. The membrane building layout will be developed so that no future building expansion will be required to expand the design capacity to 16 MGD.
Burns & McDonnell and Garney construction are responsible for all design and construction aspects of the project including preliminary design, process and ancillary equipment design, preparation of design documents, coordination with local building and fire departments and other state and local government agencies, equipment procurement, and construction.
