- Emery South-Sheffield 161-kV Transmission Line
The project consisted of rebuilding approximately 17.5 miles of 161-kV transmission line and constructing a new 161/13.8-kV Substation as part of connecting to the new 565 Megawatt Power Iowa Generating Center.
The aggressive project schedule required that the line be surveyed, designed and out for construction bid in just over four months with an even more aggressive five month winter construction schedule in northern Iowa.

Burns & McDonnell was responsible for all aspects of transmission line design, which included contracting an aerial survey of the route to support the PLS-CADD line design and to meet the demanding schedule. Burns & McDonnell was also responsible for developing loading criteria, structure design, insulation, vibration analysis, clearances, and sag/tension design.
Additional responsibilities included preparing all construction contract documents including plan & profile drawings, specifications and hardware assembly drawings. Burns & McDonnell also provided on-site construction management.
