- Exhaust Plenum
As the mining operation expanded, additional exhaust venting was necessary for the underground mine. We designed a new exhaust plenum for the additional ventilation.
The new plenum was approximately 21 feet 6 inches by 16 feet 6 inches and served a 4,500 HP fan. The motor foundation included a riser block so that a 3,000 HP motor could be used immediately while accommodating future use of a larger 4,500 HP motor without foundation modifications.
Self-closing doors fit the end of the round evase and were mounted with a sloped rather than vertical hinge so the doors would naturally fall shut when the fan was not in use. The sloping installation required elliptical shaped doors to fit the round evase.
In a subsequent contract, we also provided structural analysis and design modifications for the existing exhaust plenum to accommodate an increase in the negative pressure. Reinforcement of the stiffened steel plate structure was designed to minimize downtime of the plenum.
