- Fairplay Wastewater Treatment Plant
Burns & McDonnell provided planning and design-build services (i.e., guaranteed maximum price with shared savings) for a new wastewater treatment plant for the Fairplay Sanitation District. This 0.3 million-gallon-per-day (MGD) mechanical treatment plant replaced the existing aerated lagoon, which could not meet the ammonia nitrogen effluent limits since its performance was significantly affected by low influent temperatures (about 6 degrees Celsius). The new facility is designed to perform consistent low-level ammonia removal using the integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) process with preanoxic denitrification.
The project included assisting the district in the site application process, planning the treatment plant and design-build services. The new mechanical plant includes influent pumping, screening, grit removal, alkalinity adjustment, secondary treatment using IFAS technology (including total nitrogen reduction), ultraviolet (UV) light disinfection, aerobic sludge digestion and other site improvements.
