DTE Energy's 2016 and 2017 FK breaker replacement program included physical and protection and controls design to replace several aging GE Type FK 40-kV oil circuit breakers (OCB) with new ABB Type 48PM31-20 SF6 gas circuit breakers (GCB). Our team executed the program for DTE.
The vintage OCBs were reaching the end of their useful life and necessary major replacement components were not available. This warranted complete replacement of the entire breaker and its relaying/control panels. The scope of work for each project included:
Complete circuit breaker replacement and associated conductors/fittings
Replace breaker mats, handholes, conduit/fittings, insulators and control cables
Complete relaying and breaker control panel replacement in the control building
Revise station alarm schemes as required
Modify table tray systems
Our substation design engineering team, working with DTE staff, was able to meet an aggressive milestone deadline for the 2016 and 2017 programs and is handling the 2018 program, which includes 25 breakers and 41 associated control panel upgrades.
