- Football Stadium Program Management
When the Truman Sports Complex opened in the 1970s, building two stadiums instead of one multipurpose venue was a revolutionary concept. But as other cities demolished multiuse facilities in favor of dedicated baseball and football stadiums, the complex — once innovative — fell behind. In 2006, voters approved a sales tax increase to finance a $425 million renovation of Kauffman Stadium and Arrowhead Stadium, adding fan amenities, expanding suite accommodations and creating climate-controlled concourse areas. The Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals extended their leases with the Sports Complex Authority through 2030 and entered into a partnership for the renovations.
As owner’s representative for the Jackson County Sports Complex Authority, Burns & McDonnell oversaw design and renovation at the baseball stadium and provided oversight of funds disbursement. Our assistance extended into the public information realm. Public scrutiny of the project was intense, so transparency was a priority. Our team members developed and implemented the overall communication strategy to keep the public informed of the renovation’s progress.
Burns & McDonnell's role:
- Reviewed and approved the design documents to verify key project elements were included in the project as well as provide quality control.
- Reviewed construction to confirm that the work was done according to the approved documents.
- Approved and tracked disbursement of funds.
- Assisted with the administration of the project-specific Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) and Women Business Enterprise (WBE) involvement program and the administration of the project-specific Workforce Diversity program.
- Provided and implemented an overall communication strategy for the renovation of sports complex.
- Facilitated the coordination between the design professionals and contractors for Arrowhead Stadium with their counterparts at Kauffman Stadium.
