- Global Infrastructure Transition Project
Burns & McDonnell is providing comprehensive services for USAirways on its Global Infrastructure Transition Project (GITP). As America West integrates into USAirways, all USAirways locations will be set up to work on the America West ticketing system.
The job consists of pulling new Category 6 voice and data cabling to all locations with a computer, upgrading the computer, monitor, and network equipment, and dealing with complications. Burns & McDonnell provides the local electrical contractor for the cabling, the millwork contractor to deal with modifications needed to accommodate larger computer monitors, and handles airport permitting.
A new reservation system required replacing existing computers and replacing some 15-inch monitors with 17-inch monitors. New Category 6 cables were installed in each designated location (two for data, and one for voice). This allowed the new system to run at 1 gigabyte speed. This site example has two communication rooms, one behind the ticket counter and one near the gates. They are connected through a 6-strand, 62.5 micron, multi-mode fiber optic cable. This site distance exceeded the limit for copper cables, so a six-strand, 62.5-micron, multi-mode fiber optic cable was installed. This project has been coordinated with several moves occurring at the station.
