- Hydrocracker Upgrade
Our experienced project team assisted Valero in a major upgrade to an existing high-pressure hydrocracking unit to increase selective conversion to diesel. This included the addition of a large high-pressure reactor, a high-pressure separator, 13 high-pressure heat exchangers, and other equipment additions and modifications in the product fractionation area. The project featured pre-turnaround installation of the new reactor and associated equipment and an extensive unit turnaround to install the remaining equipment and associated piping. At the end of the turnaround, the unit was commissioned without incident and has met all process objectives.
The hydrocracker upgrade involved implementation of licensor-developed technology for the high-pressure circuit. Burns & McDonnell process engineers developed flow sheets that maximized the capabilities and reuse of the existing facilities and minimized the new investment to help obtain project approval. The engineering was enhanced with participation of our high-value Burns & McDonnell India office. The high-pressure equipment and alloy piping materials were procured from global suppliers. Our team was responsible for all logistics to deliver these critical materials to the site. The project included critical equipment and structure lifts, including a 3.2 million-pound reactor. The construction of the project included a large pre-turnaround scope that was constructed in and around an operating high-pressure, high-temperature unit. The unit started up quickly and has performed better than expected.
