- I-135 Reconstruction - Harvey County
The I-135 project covered 9.52 km (5.9 miles) from south of Newton to 1.4 km (0.88 miles) north of the K-15 interchange in Harvey County. The project included the complete reconstruction of the directional interchange with US-50 highway at the south project limits.
Interchanges at First Street and Broadway were reconstructed, reversing the grades of the Interstate and the side roads. Because of tight right-of-way constraints in these locations, the Interstate was elevated using MSE retaining walls. The ramps were modified to eliminate one pair of exit and entrance ramps. Connector roads were constructed, along with roundabout intersections to eliminate the weaving problem between the interchanges and to reduce right-of-way needs.
Eleven new bridges were constructed with the roadway reconstruction and seven others were modified. Traffic was carried throughout construction of the improvements, requiring extensive traffic control and sequencing plans. A total of 10 stages in three phases were needed to reconstruct the roadway and maintain at least one lane of traffic in both directions at all times.
At the time the project was awarded to Burns & McDonnell, the design schedule was critical, as the project scope had grown from a simple resurfacing to a major reconstruction of both the pavement and two major interchanges. Burns & McDonnell was able to provide the resources necessary to complete the design and allow the project bid to occur in keeping with the requirements of the federal funding.
