- Lewis & Clark Viaduct
The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) selected our team to design the Phase 1 Westbound I-70 bridge reconstruction as part of a multi-phase project for the Lewis & Clark Viaduct. The firm brought extensive experience in the design and construction of major river crossings to the project.
We identified construction techniques to minimize impacts to adjacent properties. The team also developed comprehensive urban design guidelines (aesthetics implementation) that will be adopted by the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, as a part of their downtown master plan. This approach will give each phase of the Lewis & Clark Viaduct project a consistent look.
The project scope included preparation of field check plans and railroad coordination. The project is located within the precision approach to the Wheeler Airport in downtown Kansas City. As design progressed, the team coordinated the horizontal and vertical alignment as well as signing, lighting and aesthetic elements with the airport.
The closure of westbound I-70 is anticipated to last for two construction seasons and will impact KDOT; MoDOT; Kansas City, Missouri; and Kansas City, Kansas. The team is developing a plan to coordinate maintenance of traffic and detour plans for impacted stakeholders. The team is also coordinating strategic communication on the project to keep the public and impacted stakeholders, such as the Fairfax Industrial District, informed throughout the process and to gather input that will help maintain access during construction.
