- Life Expectancy Evaluation
Burns & McDonnell provided a wind farm life expectancy evaluation on the Taconite Ridge 1 Wind Farm in St. Louis County, Minn. Minnesota Power, the developer and operator of the project, was using Clipper 2.5-MW Liberty wind turbines to generate about 25 megawatts (MW) of energy on this farm.
Minnesota Power needed an estimate of the useful project life of the wind farm for purposes of financial due diligence and proper accounting. The evaluation included due diligence on the turbines and an evaluation of the life expectancy of other wind farm components.

- Wind farm life expectancy evaluation
Minnesota Power, Duluth, Minn., signed an agreement to acquire power from the Taconite Ridge 1 Wind Farm project in St. Louis County, Minn. As the developer and operator of the project, Minnesota Power was using Clipper 2.5-MW Liberty turbines to produce about 25 MW of energy as part of its renewables program.
Minnesota Power asked Burns & McDonnell to estimate the useful project life of the wind farm for purposes of financial due diligence. The Burns & McDonnell scope of work included a life expectancy assessment of the following wind farm assets:
- Access roads
- Electrical gathering system
- Wind turbine foundations
- Wind turbines
The Burns & McDonnell project scope did not include evaluating the wind resource of the project site, nor did it include an evaluation of the array design of the wind project. Specific design/engineering aspects pertinent to the wind resource and production capabilities of the wind farm were also not included. The focus of the project was solely on assessing the life expectancy of the assets being deployed in the wind farm.
