McIntosh Unit 1 is a compressed air energy storage (CAES) facility that has been operating since 1991. The CAES facility has a generator that operates in both generation and motor (compression) modes and, as a peaking unit, it regularly comes online and goes offline daily and has as many as 600 starts in a year. When reliability and other safety concerns about the existing generator breaker prompted the need for upgrades, our team completed an engineering assessment of the existing breaker.
Based on operational issues and the inability to obtain parts, we recommended a full replacement. Our assessment also included budgetary pricing for EPC activities. Following the assessment, we provided detailed design and procurement assistance for all electrical equipment, contract administration, relay settings, construction support and commissioning services.
