This Kansas City, Kansas, medical office building is an eight-story, 216,000-square-foot specialty care addition to the main hospital. It houses an imaging suite complete with MRI, CT scan and other radiology equipment, faculty practice space, associated diagnostic and treatment space, reception/retail/lobby space, and connecting bridges to the hospital and a parking garage. This facility accommodates almost 400,000 specialty care clinic visits a year. Our engineering team designed the project in a 3-D building information model (BIM), laying the groundwork for extremely accurate cost estimates.
Energy efficiency and sustainability were two important aspects of the vision for this new facility. Burns & McDonnell studied many design components, such as exterior skin and insulation types, roof insulation and color, and options for heat recovery and water conservation. The selections are saving the owner more than 35 percent annually on utility costs without additional capital construction costs. The building achieved LEED Silver certification, and the mechanical HVAC systems contributed eight Energy and Atmosphere credits toward that goal.
