- Municipal Sanitary Landfill
The Morrison County Sanitary Landfill is in Little Falls Township, Morrison County, Minn. The landfill is permitted by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) and receives approximately 35,000 tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) annually.
Burns & McDonnell assisted the county in draft permit negotiations with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA). Project team members also previously completed an updated final cover design (increasing final cover side slopes from 5:1 to 4:1), including slope stability calculations.
Cell 5 Design and Construction
Burns & McDonnell completed the plans and specifications for a 3.4-acre landfill expansion (Cell 5). Project bidding was completed in early 2014 and Cell 5 will be constructed in summer 2014. Six bids were received from pre-qualified entities, and a low bid of approximately 10 percent less than the engineer's estimate was received.
The landfill installed two groundwater corrective action systems (CAS 1 and CAS 2) in response to the migration of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the groundwater from the closed, unlined portion of the landfill. Each system consists of two groundwater extraction wells and an irrigation system to volatilize the VOCs. The landfill's permit required an effectiveness evaluation for groundwater CAS 2.
Hydrogeologists from Burns & McDonnell reviewed the landfill's geologic and hydrogeologic conditions, the historical system data, and the groundwater monitoring results associated with CAS 2. Based on the data evaluated, Burns & McDonnell provided the landfill with conclusions regarding the system's historical performance and recommendations for future operations.
