- New Fire Hydrant Installations
In 2001, the City of Phoenix identified the need to install new fire hydrants to increase the level of service to residential, commercial and light industrial land users in the West Central area of Phoenix. Specifically, the area addressed was bounded by Central Avenue to the east, 39th Avenue to the west, McDowell Road to the south and Indian School Road to the North.
Initially a fire hydrant location study identified the need to add or delete fire hydrants. Existing site data was gathered, including field checking proposed locations and topographic surveying for site base maps incorporating existing underground utilities and property lines. Hydrant installations were designed, including front- and/or back-taps into the water main. During this phase Burns & McDonnell also provided public relations support, including contact of adjacent property owners for acceptance of proposed fire hydrant locations and a public information telephone number service to answer project-relevant questions.
During final design, Burns & McDonnell prepared special provisions specifications for traffic and bus routing. Permitting was submitted and approved through the Maricopa County Environmental Services Division.
A Preliminary Opinion of Probable Construction Costs was completed and submitted with 70 percent drawings. Another Preliminary Opinion of Probable Construction Costs was completed and submitted, along with an MBE/WBE Trades Estimate, with 90 percent drawings. Burns & McDonnell provided bidding period support with clarification to bidder questions and necessary addenda in response to questions. Final construction consisted of 65 hydrants in 10 of the 28 quarter-sections of the project area.
